Pie-Eyed

You may remember that at the start of this trip I set myself a mission to try every type of pie in New Zealand and Australia. I tried my best but now I admit that it has beaten me.

For I am pied out. That said, I went out with a bang having eaten two today, one each for breakfast and lunch.

The Beechworth Bakery - other branches are available
It sounds extravagant but we were in the Beechworth Bakery, which has claims to be the best bakery in Australia. The blackboard listed their ‘signature pie’ – the Ned Kelly - which I had to try. It was very Australian, featuring a steak pie with a egg plus cheese on top, then baked - so many calories in such a small space. It was good, not earth-shattering and so I doubt that I will ever have another but I can tick it off my bucket list.

Breakfast, with lunch packed and ready to go
The same goes for the Beesting – a sweet bun topped with honey and nuts and filled with custard cream and apricot jam. Yes, I had that for breakfast too, after the pie. Greedy maybe but you have to take these opportunities when they come along. But now I'm beat, I’ve had enough.

And the same goes for chips.  I don’t want to see any more of them for a very long time. What I really want is a nice salad, perhaps a crisp lettuce with a peppery radish or two. Yes, give me the green stuff for a month or two, over the coming English summer. I may even go veggie. That’s Australian for 'no more meat pies'.
