The individual and community pride in the way so many Germans sweep the pavement outside their houses is to be commended. Cycle through any village and there they are sweeping up the dust and debris to leave the sidewalk spotless. This national obsession puts it at the top of my unoffical cleanliness league.
I am sorry to say it but of the three countries I have cycled through the UK comes a poor third in terms of highway litter, even on the cycle paths and small country roads. I would then place Francee second.
Of course it could be argued that the UK is a small island with more vehicles and less places for the litter to hide. Or that Germans throw it away but then have armies of litter pickers to remedy the sitution. But I don´t think so. Too many of us just throw it away. We should all become putz maenner and clean up, even after other peoples litter as we go.
