My Kind of Town - Hokitika

I love the South Island. It's my kind of place. You know that a country has down to earth values when  agricultural products are advertised in the newspaper - items like irrigation systems and backhoes. Stuff that you can build things with.

And the people have real jobs, ones I can really relate to. I am sure that there are graphic liaison coordinators around here it's just that I haven't met one yet. However, I have come across pipe layers, roofers and truckers.

Of course they are not all angels. The paper today reported that one had attacked a celebrity sportsman with a stool in a bar.  But the bar owner kindly provided a testimonial to help him in court: "Anyone can have a bad day. He's not perfect. A lot of people aren't. I've had worse patrons than Craig". It says a lot about a country when people will stand by you like that.

Even the signs you see are friendly. They suggest that you not do things, they don't insist. Hence "Swimming not advised" or "Track uneven, Suitable shoes recommended". It's all so civilised.
