She sold me on staying within the Porvince of Lodi for a while longer, the helpful lady at the Cremona Tourist Information. I am becoming a sucker for this. I could cycle down the cycle paths of the River Po and stay at any one of the Agiturismos that also offered camping. She even printed out a list.
And she was right to begin with. It was like the Dabune all over again. Lovely smooth flat cycle paths, often on the river dykes, meant that I covered maybe 50kms in an afternoon ride. And then it all went to pot.
The Agiriturismo was way out of town and took some finding. When I did it was closed with a note saying "rushed to hospital" with a number to call. So I did. The guy at the other end was not going to cooperate. They were definitely closed, perhaps understandably. Although at the time my need for a campsite overode any life threatening ailment from my perspective.
After an hour of fussing around I resigned myself to wild camping and a beer in a local bar gave me time to collect my thoughts. Looking back, of course I should have phoned ahead to check beforehand that they were open but the laguage barrier plus the desire to get on meant I never did. So here we go, find a quiet discrete place, somewhere out fields and bed down for the night. Tomorrow it's back to Plan A and a campsite that Sally has found me in Modena. I will stop ealry to recoup my strength. All told, an interesting learning experience.
