In my estimation the loneliest place for the trekking cyclist is right next to people, on the highway, approaching a major city. The environment changes within a few minutes from peaceful countryisde to aggressive motorland. The road becomes multi-lane highway to cope with the concentration of vehicles, seeking to whisk them into or around the centre.
Cars and lorries flash by, often with little patience towards the end of their long journey. The roads have flyovers and underpasses offering energy sapping inclines to the tired cyclist. All around is concrete, asphalt and noise. The underlying message is that you shouldn't be there and the truth is that you really doen't want to be.
