Tour No. 12 - Firenze - August 31st

The tour group stands ouside the Basilica di Santa Croce fervently loyal to their number sign for fear of missing their turn or being accidentally cast adrift. Meanwhile the pigeons, like the stall holders, bustle around seeking the juicy morsels that the tourists scatter. These pigeons should get organised and insist on a fee before being photographed. They are not realising their full worth.

And so we turn another cultural centre into an economic Disneyland. Cambridge is the same. Soon these cities will not be inhabited by local citizens as the pressure of the tourist industry forces them out, to be replaced by more souvenir shops, umbrellared street restaurants and artizanal grottos. But it's time to go. Must catch my tour party slot.
