French Windows

Continuing the theme of spatial awareness, I am sure that our cat thinks that there are two parallel worlds outside of our house. He makes his own way out of the flap in the back door but occasionally asks to be let out to the patio via the French window. So I am sure that in his mind one world is accessed through the back door, the other through the French ones. If he goes out of one door he tries never to re-enter via the other.

I like the idea. It reminds me of when I was young and believed when told that the new Marks and Spencer’s shop in the Eldon Centre in Newcastle was so big that the back entrance was really the M&S in Carlisle.

Back to the cat. He may have more spatial awareness than my brother who is kindly fixing the outside drain pipe from the sink in our utility room. I then heard that after doing half the job he popped inside to wash his hands before lunch. Later he wondered why there was water all over the outside paving. I have a feeling that the cat wouldn’t have made the same mistake.

As a postscript, I later saw ‘two worlds’ in action. The back entrance to Camping les Canardieres in Montay sur Seine outside Paris is the front entrance to Camping des Isles. Perhaps they each attract a different sort of clientele.
