Tunnel Love

I know that I am probably sounding like a stuck record but this has to be the best. Cycling over the ridge to join the Bourgogne Canal you ride into a small town, like Vandenesse en Auxois with its own boat basin like a small lake, an ancient bridge spans the water, all around is decorated with flowers, the cafes full of local people enjoying a drink, the boats are moored up or chugging by. It’s just idyllic

So you cycle on and the next place has something more to offer. Pouilly had its own Sunday fair, one of those that you do not quite understand what it’s all about. A few tents are erected, a couple of model boats on show, a bit of history about the canal, a polystyrene model to show the topography of the area, some chicken and chips to eat and that’s it. But who cares? It just adds to the stroll around the boat basin.

What is amazing is the fact that the canal traverses the town by way of a 3.3km tunnel built from 1820-1830. Trivial facts and major feats.
