I went 'off piste' today, leaving the river at Tonnerre and taking the local D-road, as several people had advised that the cycle path becomes very difficult. It was the right decision as I made good progress and it was a refreshing change to ride along the top of hills. But then Angela Lansbury in Joigny persuaded me back on to the canal path. It was a mistake, for the ruts churned up by dumper trucks had filled with rain water making the going tough. Not enough to ruin my day, just mildly disappointing.
